Podiatric Physician’s Guide to Infection Control Part 1

Robert Smith, DPM, MSc, RPh

This lecture fulfills part of the podiatric Infection Control and Risk Management continuing education requirement for both New York and Missouri, and is an important Risk Management topic for Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, Arizona, Georgia, Kanas, Montana, and Pennsylvania as these states specifically outline in their practice act and/or practice rules that not adhering to proper infection control protocols and procedures is an infraction of such laws and rules and is considered unprofessional and unethical behavior (as of 2021). (Podiatry CME State Requirements for updates). Risk Management typically includes strategies for avoiding medical errors as well as studies in practicing medicine in an ethical manner. This presentation is Part 1 of 2 and focuses on the central theme of infection control data to ensure patient safety and how to provide a clean and infection free environment in your practice. An appraisal of infection control strategies and mitigating tools for the podiatric physician is grounded in clinical base statistics as well as reports from medical text and best practice guidelines; so that the physician may develop mitigating tools to avoid exposing their patients to contiguous disease. The goal of these 2-hour long presentations is to fulfill 2 hours of the CME requirement for podiatric physicians.
